the first use of the word, I think it not unlikely that Hesiod is
indulging his fondness for etymologizing, though in a less than
obvious manner. The name Chaos symbolizes the initial stage of
pre-cosmic reality-a yawning chasm or abyss. Since it stands at the
beginning of things, it cannot be envisioned according to the laws of
