✧ Shrine of Khaos Protogonos ✧

A digital shrine of Khaos Protogonos, the First-Born deity (based on Hesiod's Theogony), with occasional mentions of her children, Nyx and Erebus. Due to the lack of historical evidence of worship of Khaos, most of what I share is personal gnosis, so don't take my word as fact.

Χαεος / Khaos (also spelled Chaos) was the first of the Primordial gods (protogenoi) to emerge at the dawn of creation. She was followed in quick succession by Gaia (Gaea, Earth), Tartaros (the Pit Below) and Eros (Procreation).

THE COSMOGONY from THEOGONY by Hesiod

« Verily at the first Chaos came to be, but next wide-bosomed Earth, the ever-sure foundations of all4 the deathless ones who hold the peaks of snowy Olympus, and dim Tartarus in the depth of the wide-pathed Earth, and Eros (Love), fairest among the deathless gods, who unnerves the limbs and overcomes the mind and wise counsels of all gods and all men within them. From Chaos came forth Erebus and black Night; but of Night were born Aether5 and Day, whom she conceived and bare from union in love with Erebus. And Earth first bare starry Heaven, equal to herself, to cover her on every side, and to be an ever-sure abiding-place for the blessed gods. And she brought forth long Hills, graceful haunts of the goddess-Nymphs who dwell amongst the glens of the hills. She bare also the fruitless deep with his raging swell, Pontus, without sweet union of love. »

Khaos was the lower atmosphere which surrounds the earth--both the invisible air and the gloom of fog and mist. The word khaos means "gap" or "chasm" being the space between heaven and earth. It is perhaphs due to this association that Khaos was also sometimes called Αηρ / Aer (meaning "air").

The three "airs" of Ancient Greek

« The middle air was aer or khaos, a colourless mist which enveloped the mortal world. The lower air was erebos, the mists of darkness, which enveloped the dark places beneath the earth and the realm of the dead. The third was the upper air of aither, the mist of light and blue of the heavenly ether. The aither enveloped the mountain peaks, clouds, stars, sun and moon. »

Khaos was the mother and grandmother of the other misty essences--Erebos (the mists of netherworld darkness), Aither (the ethereal mists of heaven), Nyx (the night) and Hemera (the day), as well as the numerous emotion-driving Daimones (Spirits) which haunted it. She was also a goddess of fate like her daughter Nyx and grand-daughters the Moirai (Moirae).

As the goddess of the air Khaos was also the mother of birds, just as Gaia (the Earth) was the mother of land animals, and Thalassa (the Sea) was the mother of fish.

Aristophanes, Birds 685 ff (trans. O'Neill) (Greek comedy C5th to 4th B.C.)

« At the beginning there was only Khaos (Chaos, the Chasm) [Air], Nyx (Night), dark Erebos (Darkness), and deep Tartaros (the Pit). Ge (Gaea, Earth), Aer (Air) [Aither] and Ouranos (Uranus, Heaven) had no existence. Firstly, black-winged Nyx (Night) laid a germless egg in the bosom of the infinite deeps of Erebos (Darkness), and from this, after the revolution of long ages, sprang the graceful Eros (Desire) with his glittering golden wings, swift as the whirlwinds of the tempest. He mated [or fertilised] in deep Tartaros (the Pit) with dark Khaos (Chaos, the Chasm) [Air], winged like himself, and thus hatched forth our race [the birds], which was the first to see the light. »

Modern Prayers (written by your's truly)

General Prayer to Khaos

I invoke you, Khaos, the Chasm of air,
Genderless void that sits between Heaven and Earth,
I pray to you, O great and ancient god!

From nothing there was something
And that something was Air, you,
And from you, Nyx and Erebus, your children of one parent, emerged,
And from them Aither and Hemera to complement,
And all the daimons of the earth.

I sing of you, First-Born Khaos Pantrophos,
All-Sustaining force of law and order of the world,
May your name never be forgotten!

Inhale. Exhale. A prayer to Khaos. Inhale. Exhale.

Who is the air that surrounds us all,
The air that fills our lungs,
Keeps our hearts beating and our minds sharp?
Khao, the Middle Air.

Inhale. Exhale.

Life giving primordial force just like Gaia,
Winged and ever-present just like Eros,
Dark, murky and misty just like Tartaros,
Khaos, the Middle Air.

Inhale. Exhale.

You exist in an eternal paradox,
Everywhere and nowhere at once,
Just how Gaia and Pontus keep us alive
And give us shelter, so do you, blessed air.
You sit between Gaia and Aether,
Facilitating the space between mortals and deathless gods.

Inhale. Exhale.

Hear my prayers, O Primordial Void,
Your feathery embrace gives me strength
And every breath I take
Is part of my devotion to you!
